Entry Recommendations:

At least 12 credits in NCEA Level 2 Wood or Metal, or by negotiation with the Assistant HOLA.

 

 

Course Outline:
  • Health and safety (demonstrating safe practices in the workshop)
  • Accuracy, precision, marking out (basic measurements) and literacy
  • Planning, research, evaluating product, quality finishing
  • Evaluating individual performance
  • using hand tools, equipment and machinery
  • preparing cutting lists and orthographic drawings
  • This course is assessed through Wood Trades WDC Unit Standards.  The projects in the course are around building on skills from Level 2, with a focus on fine art and producing a well-designed piece of furniture that incorporates several different techniques, and materials.  A variety of skills that include curving and shaping timber through lamination and jig making with the option of students being able to design parts of the furniture themselves. 

Where Does It Lead:

Building related trades and related employment opportunities in building e.g., joinery, furniture making, carpentry, cabinet maker, boatbuilding etc.
