Course Outline:

Year 11 students will learn how extreme natural events (earthquakes, Volcanoes and tsunami waves) have shaped Canterbury and Banks Peninsula. Students will gain skills in: planning and implementing fieldwork, collaborating in teams, using equipment, verbal and written communication through essay and report writing, discussions and presentations.

Students will be introduced to the ArcGIS spatial world and complete all maps and analysis using this Geographic Information System.  Student licences for ArcGIS are now available for all Geography students.

Field Trip: Research the Lyttelton volcano complex, Gebbies Pass, Allandale, Sign of the Takahe, Rapanui Shag Rock, Gondola ride and Halswell Quarry.

Students taking 11GEOb need to have an interest in natural events and want to gain knowledge in being able to describe the processes that contribute to spectacular landscapes.

Where Does It Lead:

11GEOa, Geography 201, Geography 301, Tertiary studies at University. A Geography degree leads to careers in public service, the tourism industry, companies dealing with geographic information systems (GIS) and global positioning systems (GPS), the police, local authorities, and in education.
