Previous experience in Materials Technology courses recommended. 

Course Outline:
  • Health and safety.  Demonstrating knowledge of safe practices and working safely within the workshop
  • Accuracy, precision, marking out basic measurements and literacy
  • Planning, research, evaluating product, quality finishing
  • Evaluating individual practice and  performance
  • using hand tools, equipment and machinery
  • preparing cutting lists and reading plans

In this semester course students will learn about machinery and equipment through a practical project along with ongoing written evidence.

Either the Table lamp or the Table trebuchet will be engineered using a variety of engineering techniques.

Both projects involve machine work on the lathe and milling machine and an array of hand work; braising could be added to the projects. 

 

Where Does It Lead:

Materials Technology (Hard Materials) Courses, MTE203 assessed either Unit Standards or University approved Achievement Standards.

This course leads to university and polytechnic courses, Metal-based trade industries and metal-related employment opportunities such as automotive industry, heavy vehicle industry, panel repair and automotive engineering.
