Course Outline:

This course focuses on a wider range of historical and more modern global conflicts, moving beyond the World Wars to explore events such as the Vietnam War, contemporary warfare and terrorism. We will engage with a wide range of text types, including film, short stories, novels, poetry, and nonfiction.

Through these texts, we will investigate complex and thought-provoking themes such as the duality of human nature, the psychological effects of war, society’s addiction to conflict, and the brutal realities of combat. There will also be opportunities to explore older historic texts that reflect on the enduring nature of conflict, allowing us to compare past and present representations of war.

This course encourages you to think critically about how war is portrayed in literature and media, and how these portrayals help us understand the ongoing impact of conflict on individuals, communities, and societies.
