Course Outline:

Mātauranga Māori and Science B

Students will explore the concept of journeying (to and within Aotearoa), both in the past and the future through two different knowledge systems, Mātauranga Māori and Science. The Mātauranga Māori will be based around waka journeying to Aotearoa (including navigation) and journeying within Aotearoa especially Te Waipounamu (including maramataka).  It will include a two night noho marae, and field trips including waka ama and Tāwhaki on Kaitorete.  The Science in this semester is Physics and Astronomy.  In Physics, this will include aspects of mechanics, use of formula, a practical investigation to find a linear relationship. In Astronomy the interactions between sun, moon and earth.

Throughout this course, the Mātauranga Māori will be provided, if possible, by mātanga or would be from resources provided for, or approved by manawhenua.

Where Does It Lead:

This course provides students with understanding (and confidence in their ability) of some general aspects of Science at level 6 of the New Zealand Curriculum and provides a solid entry into Year 12 Physics and Earth and Space Science courses. In conjunction with Mātauranga Māori and Science A, students will be equipped to succeed in any senior Science course at Lincoln High School

There is a huge need in Aotearoa for individuals who are able to confidently stand in te Ao Māori and the world of Science. The career options are extensive.
