Course Outline:

Mātauranga Māori and Science A

Students will explore our local water bodies and the life within them through two different knowledge streams, Mātauranga Māori and Science. The Mātauranga Māori will be primarily based on mahinga kai (especially harakeke/flax and tuna (eels), ahi (fire) and wai (water). This will include field trips to Te Pā O Moki, Wairewa, Okuti Valley, Ararira stream and central Christchurch.  The Science of Biology and Chemistry will be explored through living organisms and the environment in which they live. The biology will include ecology, (especially adaptations, life cycles and feeding relationships) and genetics (DNA, genes, chromosomes and inheritance.)  The chemistry with include basic atomic structure and ion formation and acid base reactions.  Throughout this course, the Mātauranga Māori will be taught by mātanga or from resources approved by manawhenua.

Where Does It Lead:

This course provides students with understanding (and confidence in their ability) of some general aspects of Science at level 6 of the New Zealand Curriculum and provides a solid entry into Year 12 Biology and Chemistry courses. In conjunction with Mātauranga Māori and Science B, students will be equipped to succeed in any senior Science course at Lincoln High School

There is a huge need in Aotearoa for individuals who are able to confidently stand in te Ao Māori and the world of Science. The career options are extensive.
