Entry Recommendations:

This course is not open entry.

Students will be identified for this course based on their literacy requirements as identified from their overall achievement in Year 10 and the NCEA Literacy Co-Requisite Unit Standard for Reading.

This course aims to support and reinforce students' competence and confidence in reading literacy skills.

Students will gain skills and knowledge with a focus on reading.

Course Outline:

This course is designed to support students who need to build their reading literacy or have not yet obtained the Literacy Reading unit standards in Year 10. Students need to pass both the Reading and Writing unit standards to gain literacy and while this Semester One course will include writing skills, the primary focus will be on developing reading comprehension skills. The semester two course, 11ENLb - Writing focuses primarily on preparing for the writing literacy standard.

  • Reading for understanding (reading comprehension) 
  • Write to communicate ideas 
  • Foundational spelling and grammar skills 
Assessment:

This course is assessed through three in-school assessments. Students will also have the opportunity to sit the the NCEA Literacy Co-Requisite Unit Standard for Reading. There will be the option for students who are ready to attempt the Literacy Co-Requisite Unit Standard for Writing.   

Where Does It Lead:

ENG202, LIT001. In exceptional cases, students could apply for entry into ENC201, ENG201 and ENH201.  This would require HOLA approval.
