Entry Recommendations:

Ākonga are expected to rehearse in and out of class time and be available for evening performances for major roles. 

Students new to Drama may need to complete a short audition with the HOD.

Course Outline:

This advanced course (aligned with Level 7 of the National Curriculum) builds on your performance and production skills while developing critical thinking and research abilities. You'll work individually and in groups, taking ownership of your learning and pushing your creative boundaries. 

If you're aiming for the NCEA Drama Scholarship, you’ll work on advanced concepts, texts, and techniques to create challenging and innovative performances. 

Key standards include: 

  • Interpreting and performing scripted text using drama techniques (4 credits) 
  • Devising and performing drama to explore a concept (5 credits) 
  • Using complex performance skills from a chosen drama form or period (4 credits) 
  • Performing a major role in a significant production (5 credits) 

Optional extensions: 

  • Analysing live performances (external, 4 credits) 
  • Scriptwriting (5 credits) 
  • Directing (5 credits) 
Where Does It Lead:

Drama develops communication, presentation, and critical thinking skills valued in careers like law, medicine, commerce, teaching, and the creative industries. It also opens doors to specialist study in the Performing Arts. Employers and universities value Drama students for their creativity, collaboration, and ability to think on their feet.
