Technology Requirements:
A laptop is of benefit for this course
Entry Recommendations:

Students must have taken either 11CHE, 11SCIb or 11SCMa. However, it is ideal if students have taken two Year 11 Science courses in preparation for studying a Year 12 science course. Alternatively, students can discuss their suitability with the HOLA.

Course Outline:

Some of the Chemistry from Level 1 is developed further, and new topics are introduced. There is a core section of four main topics:

2.4   Atomic structure and bonding.

2.7   Oxidation – reduction.

2.5   Organic substances (carbon compounds)

2.6   Chemical Reactivity.

There are a number of experiments incorporated into all these areas.

Students undertake one practical Achievement Standards throughout the year, with external Achievement Standards at the end of the year.

As a guide please click here to see the standards that were included in the 2025 course. These can potentially change in 2026.

Where Does It Lead:

Year 13/Scholarship Chemistry and on to polytechnic or university. It is a prerequisite for a large number of jobs (e.g. veterinary, physical education, medicine, and is widely recognised as an advantage in others such as nursing, engineering, technicians and agricultural diplomas and radiography).
