- Approx Cost:
- Course books $30.00.
- Technology Requirements:
- A laptop is of benefit for this course
- Entry Recommendations:
Students are expected to have 8 credits from any NCEA Level 1 Science course including a standard at Merit Level that is preferably Chemistry-based. Alternatively, students can discuss their suitability.
- Course Outline:
Some of the Chemistry from Level 1 is developed further, and new topics are introduced. There is a core section of seven main topics:
2.4 Atomic structure and bonding.
2.1 Quantitative chemistry (calculations etc).
2.7 Oxidation – reduction.
2.5 Organic substances (carbon compounds)
2.6 Physical chemistry (reactions).
There are a large number of experiments incorporated into all these areas.
Students undertake practical Achievement Standards throughout the year, with external Achievement Standards at the end of the year.
- Where Does It Lead:
Year 13/Scholarship Chemistry and on to polytechnic or university. It is a prerequisite for a large number of jobs (e.g. veterinary, physical education, medicine, and is widely recognised as an advantage in others such as nursing, engineering, technicians and agricultural diplomas and radiography).
