Students will complete this course looking at a range of text types across various genres. Whilst other Year 11 English courses are studied in themes, General English A will study a variety of text types, themes and settings. This makes it a good choice for students who may dislike the thematic courses on offer or are simply willing to explore a wide range of literature and genres.

The key skills covered in this programme are:

· creative and formal writing

· literature text studies

· visual text creation and presentation

· close reading

· film analysis

Students will be expected to complete an independent reading programme as part of this and all other English courses.

This course is an Option A course, completing the same skills as Dystopian English, but without a connected theme. All Year 11 students must select one course from Option A and one course from Option B to complete their English studies.

Please note that English is currently undergoing a national curriculum rewrite. This course is subject to change.

There are two Year 11 Diploma assessments and the external examination for the NCEA Literacy Co-Requisite Unit Standard for Writing.

ENC201, ENW201, ENG201, ENH201, ENS201, ENR001 and ENS001 (if entry recommendations are met for these courses), ENG202, LIT001
