Course Outline:

The geography and location of Aotearoa, New Zealand makes it extremely vulnerable to extreme natural events such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis. This course focuses on Aotearoa, New Zealand’s plate tectonics, geomorphology and natural disasters, whilst exploring the social, cultural, environmental and economic consequences and outcomes of these events. Geography skills such as mapping, resource interpretation and understanding different perspectives will also feature throughout the course. 

There is an expectation that you will engage with exciting content, contribute to group discussions, and be self-motivated and committed to producing your best mahi.

The assessments consist of producing an infographic, a mapping and write-up task, and a geography skills test. 

The potential field trip involves heading into town to visit Quake City, explore Ōtautahi, Christchurch post-earthquakes and look at the rebuild with a focus on the Ngāi Tahu Cultural Narrative.

Where Does It Lead:

Year 11 Geography – 11GEOa Urban Crime, Geography 201, Geography 301, and tertiary study at university. A passion for geography can lead to careers in environmental science, urban planning, conservation, tourism, public service, data science, research and policy-making and in education.
