Students are expected to have gained NCEA Level 1 Literacy.

Course Outline:

A multi-disciplinary subject that covers art, history, literature and philosophy of the ancient Greek and Roman world. Students study four topics:

  • Greek Mythology – discover the fascinating world of myth.  Study the amazing world of the Greek Hero.  Learn about Hercules, Perseus, Jason and Theseus to name a few plus the ultimate myth of Troy and the Trojan horse. 
  • Eruption of Mt Vesuvius - Students will have the opportunity to explore this significant historical event and what we can learn about the lives of the Ancient Romans from what was preserved in Pompeii after the eruption.
  • Art and Architecture of Greece and Rome.  Examine art and architecture with emphasis on their features and why they were important to the Classical world.
  • Homer:  The Odyssey – the epic story of Odysseus and his voyage home from the Trojan War.

These ancient civilisations provide the foundations for concepts that can still be found today and are relevant to New Zealand society.

Classical Studies provides the opportunity to gain up to 20 credits; two internal assessment total of 10 credits and two external assessments total of 8 credits.

Where Does It Lead:

Year 13 Classical Studies and then tertiary studies. Classical Studies is beneficial for a wide range of careers in fields as diverse as foreign affairs, trade and industry, archaeology, law, architecture, drama, museums and art galleries, journalism and teaching.
