Learning at Lincoln
Curriculum
All the subjects we offer can be seen on the
Course Planning Chart.
Fuller information is contained in the Course Booklet,
which is published in September and sent to new students with the acceptance
notification.
The Junior School
The major aims here are:
- to give students a sound grounding in the core subjects
- to give students the opportunity to explore a wide range
of other subject areas
Year 9
All students study English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies,
Physical Education, Health
Education and five optional subjects.
Year 10
All students study English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies,
Physical Education and Health Education,
and three optional subjects.
The Senior School
Year 11
All students study English, Mathematics and Science. Students also
select two or three additional optional subjects (depending on their
academic ability). All students study towards the National
Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA Level 1).
Years 12 and 13
The major aims here are:
- to give students a sound preparation in the subjects they are
studying for external awards and qualifications
- to equip students for the transition to the post-school world of
employment or further education
- to provide each student with a relevant course of study, which
matches the individual's strengths and abilities.
English is compulsory for Year 12 students, but no examination
subject is compulsory for Year 13 students. Some courses may be
offered by correspondence.
Qualifications
Students in Years 11, 12 and 13 may study towards the following
external qualifications:
1. New Zealand Qualifications Authority:
- NCEA (Level 1)
- NCEA (Level 2)
- NCEA (Level 3) and Scholarship.
- National Certificates
Lincoln High School is fully accredited to award credits in
all conventional subjects, and we have a very wide ranging
accreditation to teach and assess vocational units.
2. Papers which can be credited towards degrees at
Canterbury, Lincoln or Massey Universities.
Class Placement
In Years 9 and 10 we "broad band" classes so that each class has a
range of abilities but is made up of students whose learning rates
are similar. We provide small-group tuition for students who need
extra assistance in the core subjects, while our extension class
provides added challenge for students with fast learning rates. We
offer individual tuition to students experiencing difficulties in
Reading or Mathematics.
Class placement in Years 11 to 13 is largely based on each student's
choice of option subjects, which are selected from the wide range of
courses offered. Minimum entry requirements exist for Years 12 and
13 subjects. These are explained in the
Course Booklet.
Meeting Students' Needs
Computers
Lincoln High School is recognised as a leading school in Information
Technology intergration. We are well-equipped with
Information Technology that is available to students of all levels
and is used in a wide variety of subjects. The school is fully
networked giving access to filtered internet sites and library
facilities throughout. All students are allocated email addresses
and are able to access email and intranet material from outside the
school.
Library & Information Centre
Students are encouraged and assisted to use the library for research
and recreational reading. The computers allow access to the
internet, email and a range of electronic databases as well as a
range of computer applications. The library has a photocopier for
student use and photocopy/printing cards can be purchased from the library
staff. Other services include spiral binding and laminating.
Music
Lincoln High School has a modern music suite with a large music
room, equipped with computer facilities, class sets of keyboards and
guitars, and a number of smaller
practice studios. These facilities are used for individual/group
instrumental tuition and for performance. In addition, students can
take music as a subject at every level.
Gymnasium
Lincoln has three Gymnasia (one with a climbing wall),
and excellent facilities for Physical Education and a range of
sports like basketball, badminton and volleyball.
Transition To Work
We are actively involved in providing all students with the
information, advice and experience they need to complete a smooth
transition from school to working life. We enjoy a close
relationship with local employers, industries and tertiary
institutions.
Work Exploration
This is available to all senior students. Students are placed in
work situations of their choice where they can observe and work for
1 - 5 days.
Careers Programmes
- Every student is able to seek career information, advice and
counselling.
- All Year 13 students receive individual interviews twice a year
and interviews are offered to all Year 12 students as part of their
career programme. At other levels short courses in careers are
provided.
- An optional programme offered at Year 12 and Year 13 is Job
Seeking Skills. Students who take this course can complete the National
Certificate in Employment Skills.
Star Courses
Senior students may explore vocational courses with other providers
for a period of 4 to 5 days. The cost is mostly paid by the school.
Job Search
Job Search is available for students seriously interested in
obtaining employment. School support is provided for students while
they actively seek jobs.
Gateway
This programme for selected senior students blends school study with
workplace learning and experience. Learning is assessed in the
workplace, counting towards national qualifications.
