Course Outline:

This course follows the National Science Curriculum at Level 5 and continues the study begun in Year 9.

The topics covered include:

  • Communities.
  • Microbes.
  • Atomic structure.
  • Forces
  • Electricity and magnetism.

Various contexts are used by teachers to cover these main strands. At the end of Year 10 students will have completed study at Level 5 of the New Zealand curriculum and will be ready to study at Level 6 of the New Zealand curriculum during Year 11. 

Assessment:

Students will be assessed in all the contextual areas with a variety of tests, and an integrated examination will be held at the end of the year. 

These assessments can be used for recommending students into senior science courses.

Where Does It Lead:

NCEA Level 1 Science, Agricultural/Horticultural Science and Electronics.  Placement in Level 1 Science courses will depend on performance in assessments throughout the year, and teacher recommendation.
