- Entry Recommendations:
This course is suited to those who have a strong interest in the outdoors, and especially the water. Students who choose this course are expected to get in the water, either the pool or the sea, every week.
- Course Outline:
Students who choose this course should have a genuine enthusiasm for being in the water. The first five weeks will be dedicated to learning kayak skills. This will be done in the school pool. The aim will be to develop the skills to have good quality boat control and be able to roll the kayak, after flipping over. We will then move to a snorkel unit where we will learn the skills required to enjoy snorkelling. This will also be done in the school pool. The third water activity is surfing. We plan a trip to Sumner Beach to do surfing.
In Term two, the focus will change to camp craft skills, leading to a trip where we camp, and cook a meal, then the next day try out our kayaking and snorkelling skills in the sea.
The Semester finishes with one internal NCEA assessment on Environmental Education, and interpersonal skills.
