Entry Requirements:

Minimum of 14 credits in Level 2 Drama. Students are expected to rehearse in and out of class time and be available for evening performances for their major acting roles.

Course Outline:

This course is based around Level 7 of the National Curriculum. The course builds on the aims and skills of the Year 12 course. Year 13 Drama requires a significant commitment to gaining understanding of theory and practice through research and independent study. Students design their own course by selecting standards suited to their strengths and interests. 

Students studying for the NCEA Drama Scholarship will be working towards using wide knowledge, experience and critical analysis of drama processes, texts and theories, to inform and justify challenging and creative drama works.

This course includes 3 internal and 1 external Achievement Standard.

3.1   Interpret scripted text to integrate drama techniques in performance (4 credits).

3.2   Devise and perform a drama to realise a concept (5 credits).

3.3 Interpret a text from a prescribed playwright to demonstrate knowledge of a theatre form or period (4 credits)

3.6   Perform a substantial acting role in a significant production (5 credits).

Optional extension includes 4 internal Achievement Standards:

3.4   Select and use complex performance skills associated with a drama form or period (4 credits).

3.5   Demonstrate understanding of the work of a drama or theatre theorist of practitioner (4 credits).

3.8   Script a drama suitable for live performance (5 credits).

3.9   Direct a drama performance (5 credits).

Where Does It Lead:

There are a number of courses at Universities and Polytechnics as well as specialist courses for students interested in pursuing the Performing Arts. Employers and professional partners in today’s working environment are keen to find people with strong communication and presentation skills who have a positive attitude and the ability to connect thinking and imagination to create works independently and as part of a team.
